The frozen beer was a disappointment. No fizz and tasted like diluted lager. Another entry in the don’t try again list!
Set out, not too bright or early, to a rather more sensible temperature than Saturday. Chilly enough that I had the a/c on heat for a while when I first woke up.
Luckily the first five or so miles were on concrete cycle paths beside the main road and were predominantly flat. That meant that I could build back up gently after draining the tank a bit low on Saturday! But it did mean that the scenery wasn’t desperately exciting, mostly farmland.
It eventually got going and I followed some moderate trails up to a point I remember well from last time. You either turn right down a road and go downhill to a river bridge…. or, you cross the road, climb a cliff, cross a plateau and descend a mountain goat path down to the same bridge.
Everybody I talked to was taking the road option! Just getting there seems to be more important than the route you take.
Then the other bit I remembered from last time, the energy sapping drag up to the hut. Just too steep to ride most of it and long enough to be really painful at the end of the day.
Last time I went to this hut there was only me and some dodgy looking bugs so I erected the tent inner to keep them at bay. This time there were probably a dozen other people overnighting. Too many. Between the noise of the bugs and the critters in the river and people shuffling around I didn’t get much sleep. Also, a group of them set out at 05.00 the next morning probably in order to do 3 stages.

Critter of the day – and we are scraping the barrel here I admit – was an iridescent green bug that landed on my bar bag.
